Hi Donna & Stewart!

Testimonial:

Another wonderful trip to Lake Kaby!  I have been enjoying Lake Kaby and the Agich owners for eight years now. The walleye & northern pike fishing is excellent. One of my goals has always been to hunt moose in Canada. For eight years I have been viewing the previous year’s hunting pictures and lightly pestering Stewart, Donna, Lawrence and Ken about getting an opportunity to come and try my hand at moose hunting.  This last year was the same. Then in August I received a phone call stating they had a cancellation and was I interested in coming up on short notice to hunt moose in October. Well, to be honest, it would have taken something like the closing of the borders to keep me away. A friend and I flew in on a Saturday to begin hunting on the next Monday. The weather was unseasonably warm – upper 60’s to the mid 70’s.  Sunday evening Stewart asked if we were interested in taking a boat ride to discuss where and how we would be hunting in the morning. Away we went! We eased into a bay (later I found out that it was nick named – Moose Bay due the amount of moose that have been harvested there) and sat silently for 5 to 10 minutes. It was dead calm and about ½ hour before day light. Stewart described how we would be hunting and what to expect. He discussed the various sounds moose make and what to listen for. We reviewed wind issues and discussed keeping un-natural sounds to a minimum. We also discussed  how far we were comfortable in shooting. I’m sure over the years he has heard quite a few tales on this topic! After he completed this discussion he suggested that he would call to see if any moose would respond. Using nothing but his vocal cords, he began cow calling. It wasn’t 3 minutes and he pointed to the ridge to our left and stated one was coming. He called again and this time I heard the limb snap. Now for those of us “white tail” hunters, a limb snapping means a limb ½” or smaller. The sound was a real limb – I pictured 1” or 2” either being stepped on or being knocked off of a tree as the moose walked by. Ste repeated his calling – this time the bull answered with some major grunting. It sounded like at least every other step was followed with a grunt as the bull proceeded down off of the ridge coming towards us but at an angle in front of us. Ste called again and this time the woods erupted with grunting, limb snapping, thrashing of trees and breaking of trees! To say this was exciting is the understatement of the day! I had never experienced such emotion by a big game animal. I have had the pleasure of harvesting 4 bull elk, several mule deer, antelope and of course white tail deer in several states, and I can honestly state that nothing comes close to that experience! To finish this episode, the bull continued this display of dominance for several more minutes and then stepped out of the brush. What a bull! He stood there swaying back and forth as the light faded until it was too dark to see him anymore. He had the tall wide antlers that everyone envisions when they think of moose! Well – the next morning was opening morning, so, after experiencing my first bull moose encounter like that, sleeping was out of the question!

The next morning we began our hunting experience. We would leave camp early to be in position before the sun came and stay until 10 or 11. Stewart would call and we would strain to hear and or see moose anywhere in sight. Every evening we would leave by 3:00 and would stay until dark. Each day and evening we would hear moose, but nothing presented itself. Stewart chocked it up to the unseasonably warm weather that we were experiencing. Finally Thursday came with a change of weather. We woke to temperatures in the upper 40’s, no wind and the lake fogged in. Stewart was pretty excited! That morning we went to a different bay that viewed a bigger part of the lake and surrounding area. After first light, Stewart began calling. At eight o-clock a bull moose began bellowing at us from across the bay! He answered several times and was closing the distance, when all of a sudden, Stewart stood up and looked right at me and stated “I can hear a moose walking in the water, find it!” I began viewing various shore lines and sure enough, about 500 – 600 yards away a moose different from the vocal one we had been listening to, was walking on an opposite shore line. It took several minutes for us to determine if it was a bull or cow. Verdict – a bull!  Stewart looked in my direction and said, step back against the brush and hold still.  “I’ll call the bull over to us”. Well I was slightly skeptical, but having watched Stewart talk to moose for three days, I was also confident in his words. Sure enough, Stewart began stomping in the water and cow calling. On the third try, the moose looked in our direction, stepped into the water and began swimming this way. The shoreline curved into the bay to a point about 200 hundred yards from our current position. It became obvious that the moose was heading for that point when he was more than half way across. Due to not knowing exactly where the moose would climb ashore, Stewart and I eased into the boat and slipped as quietly as possible over closer to that point where I climbed out and found a rest on a leaning cedar tree. The bull kept coming and within a few minutes was stepping out of the lake. The shot was about 75 yards and using the high shoulder shot, anchored him right there on the shore line. To that end, the shot was anti-climatic. The real thrill was watching Stewart call that moose across the lake to us.

I have had the pleasure of hunting with a lot of individuals over the years that claim to know and understand that game we are pursuing. I can state without a doubt, that Stewart is the real deal. He knows and truly understands moose behavior. To say he worked hard on this hunt, is an understatement. His vocal calling was an unbelievable experience. For me, this hunt is definitely the most exciting hunt I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy! I extend my thanks to Stewart and his family for everything!  I hope that that I get another opportunity to enjoy moose hunting at Lake Kaby with the Agich’s!

Hi Donna;

We wanted to let you know we had a wonderful time at Kaby Kabins and although it was my first time at Kaby, I'm hoping it won't be my last.  Everything is run with such warm and friendly professionalism, I can't imagine anyone being unhappy with any of it.

It's certainly a plus to have such fine young gentlemen greet and help us each and every trip to and from the dock; they certainly do you proud.!!!! Them cleaning the fish is certainly a bonus for everyone and never a grumble or complaint is heard.  Too bad I wasn't a few decades (oops I mean years) younger.......I'd certainly bring home and keep any of those 3 boys.  Jenn presents as a very pleasant, attentive and accommodating young lady with her prompt and courteous service and it was nice to have the towels and washcloths changed part way through our stay.

The shore lunch that you provided was out of this world with such an abundance and variety of excellent home made food.  The fish being prepared in a variety of ways was a wonderful demonstration that fish doesn't always have to be fried. Your extra special touch of acknowledging a guest's birthday did not go unnoticed and while I appreciated seeing that, I'm sure the celebrant was flattered.

And the fishing.....well, what can I say.  Even an amateur like myself can catch plenty of fish!!!!!  We can't bring many home but we sure made up for that with what we ate on an almost daily basis.

In closing I would like to thank you, Stewart, the boys and Jenn for making our trip to Kaby Kabins an enjoyable one.  Thanks for the memories.!!!!

Sincerely

Sandie

My dad and I visited Agich's Kaby Kabins for the first time this year.  We didn't have a lot of walleye or pike fishing experience, but were very interested in trying it.  The Agich family was incredibly helpful in everyway.  Lawrence offered to take us to his favorite fishing spots to make sure we got off to a great start.  With a few pointers and a couple "x"s on a map, we had no trouble finding fish.  We could not ask for better hosts and outfitters, and now friends.  We ate fish everyday and the deck hands had the fish filleted and at our door before we could get our gear from the boat to the cabin.  The lake itself is huge and beautiful.  We caught fish a just about every place we tried to fish.  The shore lunch spots that are sprinkled around the lake are great spots to get out of the boat and enjoy the view.  We had a terrific time and caught over 250 fish between the two of us.  At one point, we were joking that we couldn't troll for more than 20 minutes without catching a walleye.  On an unusually windy day, we decided not to go out on the boat, and I caught 30 walleye off the dock in about an hour.  We will definitely be coming back to Kaby Kabins.

Hello Donna and Stewart,

Once we returned home after our latest escape I felt I had to write to you and again thank you and your family for another fantastic fishing trip.

Our group has been flying into remote locations for 23 years and we have been using your lodge for the past 3 years.  I can say without question, your lodge has great cabins and superb boats, motors and equipment.

Lake Kabanakagami is a fantastic fishery with abundant wild life viewing, such as moose, bears and many types of birds from ducks and loons as well as eagles and osprey.  The thing that truly sets “Agich’s Kaby Kabins” apart from all the others is the personal family touch provided by yourself and Stewart along with sons Lawrence and Ken and daughter-in-law Jennifer.  The Agich family is always there when something is required, handling requests in an accommodating and friendly manner and I would be remiss if I did not mention the superb home made treats provided…especially the cinnamon buns.

Thanks again for the fantastic memories!  We are already making our plans and looking forward to next year’s trip.

Hi Donna

I finally got one of the videos uploaded to youtube. Here is the link.

It didn't like the high def too well, seems a bit choppy. Better than nothing though.

 Hope you are well.

My friends and I have been going to Kaby Kabins ever since the Agich family has been running the camp. After trying several other locations in Ontario since 1990, we were fortunate enough to find this camp. The service is always what you would expect from a first class operation. We typically go on the American Plan  and enjoy the variety and quantity of food that we get. The cabins are very comfortable and well kept. The boats ( Lund ) and motors ( Yamaha ) are some of the best you will find fishing in Ontario. Camps generally have 9 or 15 hp motors, while Kaby has 25 hp motors with electric start. On windy days when you have to move around a lot, it sure is nice to just push a button to start instead of pulling a cord. Besides all that , the fishing is always good.! I would not hesitate to recommend Kaby Kabins.

Here is the best kept secret in Canada!!! We have been from Ontario to the Yukon, but once we landed at Agich's any discussion about where we are going fishing next year ended. We have even fished this lake from other  camps and there is no comparison. Donna,Stewart, Ken and Lawrence take care of us like we are royalty. Can hardly wait for next year!

Our group has fished in Canada for over 40 years with numerous outfitters and locations covering 10,000 square miles.  Each outpost  has provided a host of memories and experiences, none of which I would give up.   However I can say with no hesitation that our fishing experience’s with Donna and Stewart at Kaby Kabins have given us just cause to call it our Canadian destination, with cabins that offer amenities that make it a great place for the guys or a mixed group.

The lake is so large that we have yet to explore all the bays and the 100  or so islands.  We have favorite wildlife spotting areas and always have new experiences with moose and bear and watching the variety of eagles is always breathtaking.  Kenny and Lawrence, Donna and Stewarts sons and deckhands, bring an aura of enthusiasm that is contagious as they take care of your fishing needs and share their stories of the backwoods.  Oh, and fish; whether its your favorite honey hole or sneaking around new areas, it’s customary to upgrade your limit until you’re tired of reeling em in,  out of the best boats I’ve ever seen in Canada with live wells, fish finders, swivel seats and electric start 25 hp four stroke moters.  Kaby Kabins is our “final destination” for Canadian fishing.  When we’re there, we’re home.

Tom Radewahn – Saginaw, MI and our four generations of fishermen.

We have fished Kaby Lake for more than 25 years and have found that the fishing improves each year.

Agich’s Kaby Kabins is by far the best lodge on the lake. The cabins are clean, spacious, comfortable, well equipped and maintained.

When spending hours on the lake, the boats are much appreciated. The electric start 25hp four stroke motors can get you to your favorite walleye spot quickly and are great when a storm is chasing you home! The flat bottom, pedestal fishing seats, live well and depth/fish finder are all great luxuries. No more back aches or dead fish on a stringer!

The service is incredible and they are great hosts. The Agich family has quickly become part of our family!

All in all, a great fishing experience!

Our group started fishing Kaby Lake a year before Donna & Stewart took ownership Kaby Kabins. The fishing has always been great but the hospitality is out standing. The equipment is top notch (BEST ON THE LAKE).We will be fishing at Kaby Kabins for years to come.

“I started coming to Kaby Kabins 11 years ago. Each year our group looks forward to a relaxing time with good friends, fishing and food.  The level of service since the Agich’s have taken over has been outstanding and is the single reason why we will never have to look for another fishing lodge. I look forward to the years ahead when I’ll be able to bring my own son up to enjoy the experience with me.”

"I've been coming to kaby kabins since the eighties. The lake is still great. The fishing is still fantastic. I have nothing but superlatives to say about Kaby Kabins and the Agich hospitality.
